America’s AI Wealth Boom Is Lifting Markets, but Consumers Still Feel the Squeeze

people-2591963.jpgThe United States is experiencing a technology investment boom that is pushing household wealth higher, yet millions of Americans are still struggling with the cost of everyday life. For businesses, the contrast presents a difficult question. If consumers are spending more money overall, why are so many feeling worse off?

A Reuters report published on 12 October highlights the divide. The artificial intelligence investment boom has helped drive stock-market gains, lifting household wealth by around 16.5% between the end of Joe Biden’s presidency and the second quarter of 2026. However, the wealth gains have been heavily concentrated among the richest households.

The wider economy is still benefiting from consumer spending, but rising prices are eating into purchasing power. Higher energy costs, import tariffs and growing demand linked to AI infrastructure have all contributed to inflationary pressure. Housing affordability remains another major concern, with higher mortgage rates making homeownership increasingly difficult.

The result is an economy where headline wealth figures can look strong while many households feel they are falling behind.

Why the wealth gap matters to businesses

Consumer spending is a major driver of the US economy. When households feel financially secure, they are generally more willing to spend on travel, restaurants, entertainment, technology and other non-essential purchases.

But when wealth gains are concentrated among people who already own significant assets, the benefits are unlikely to reach every business equally.

Companies selling premium products and services may continue to benefit from spending by wealthier customers. Businesses serving middle- and lower-income households, meanwhile, may face greater pressure as customers become more selective about what they buy.

Recent consumer sentiment data reinforces the concern. The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index fell to 46.3 in early October, close to its record low, as Americans expressed frustration with prices and borrowing costs. Reuters reported that spending has remained relatively resilient partly because higher-income households continue to spend. Read the latest consumer sentiment report.

For small businesses, this creates a challenging environment. Sales figures alone may not reveal whether customers are genuinely comfortable spending or simply paying more for the same goods and services.

What founders and business owners should watch

The lesson is not that businesses should stop investing or assume consumer demand will collapse. Rather, companies need to understand where their customers are financially and how changing costs are affecting purchasing decisions.

Founders can start by reviewing sales trends, customer retention and average order values. If customers are buying less frequently, delaying larger purchases or trading down to cheaper alternatives, those signals may matter more than overall market performance.

Businesses should also be cautious about assuming that a rising stock market will automatically translate into stronger demand. Wealth effects can support spending, but they depend on asset prices remaining high and consumers feeling confident about their financial future.

The AI boom may create significant opportunities through new technology, infrastructure and productivity gains. Yet its benefits will depend partly on whether those gains translate into broader economic improvements rather than remaining concentrated among asset owners.

For the US economy, the challenge is balancing technological growth with affordability. For businesses, understanding that divide could be crucial to making better decisions about pricing, investment and customer demand.
