The New York Times is seeking a talented individual to join their team as a Staff Design Technologist for their New A.I. Products & Platforms mission. As they continue to focus on their essential subscription strategy, they are looking for a Design Technologist to help design and prototype compelling A.I. experiences.

As a Staff Design Technologist, you will play a crucial role in creating the next generation of A.I.-powered products for The New York Times. You will collaborate with team members across departments to identify and address user challenges, use APIs and platforms to create product experiences, and uphold the highest levels of journalistic and product excellence. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to grow and support more junior design team members, promote a culture of learning and collaboration, and participate in regular design rituals to give and receive feedback.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create clear, high-fidelity prototypes of new A.I.-powered experiences
  • Test and assess applications of generative A.I. through live A.I. APIs
  • Collaborate with engineers to determine how A.I. infrastructure and services should be integrated into client apps
  • Guide product strategy and concept development, ensuring focus on important problems and designing effective solutions
  • Create UX artifacts to assess a range of editorial and consumer scenarios
  • Lead conversations and make decisions with the cross-functional leadership team
  • Contribute to the development of design standards and systems
  • Communicate team's work to leadership within the company
  • Shape and participate in team and Product Design rituals to improve processes
  • Demonstrate support for the company's values of journalistic independence and commitment to seeking the truth and helping people understand the world

Requirements:

  • 7+ years of experience as a design technologist or UX engineer, with recent experience creating coded prototypes for native apps that use datasets
  • 7+ years of experience with interaction design and prototyping, including a portfolio showcasing a strong attention to detail for micro-interactions, motion, and accessibility best practices
  • 7+ years of experience working with user research and data analysis teams to inform product and UX decisions
  • Experience building user interfaces that integrate with LLMs (Language Models)
  • Experience refining A.I.'s tone, format, and behavior to align with brand guidelines and product goals
  • Experience working in agile environments where requirements change frequently

  • A deep curiosity for journalism and the future of the information ecosystem
