With Pharma R&D Teams Under Pressure to Turn AI into Usable Science, Helical Lands €8.4 Million

In a significant move for the pharmaceutical industry, London-based Helical has secured an €8.4 million ($10 million) Seed round. The company, known for its innovative virtual AI lab, aims to bridge the gap between computational predictions and biological decision-making. By fostering collaboration among traditionally siloed teams, Helical is set to revolutionize the way pharma R&D is conducted.

A New Era for Pharma R&D

The funding round, spearheaded by redalpine with contributions from Gradient, BoxGroup, Frst, and notable angel investors, underscores the growing interest in AI-driven drug discovery. Investors such as Aidan Gomez (CEO of Cohere), Clement Delangue (CEO of HuggingFace), and professional soccer player Mario Goetze recognize the potential of Helical's platform to transform the industry.

Co-founder Rick Schneider highlights the importance of systems over individual models, stating, “Pharma teams need a system that turns foundation models into workflows scientists can run, validate, and defend.” Helical is designed to make in-silico science reproducible at a pharma scale, enabling teams to progress from hypothesis to decision in days rather than months.

Riding the AI Wave in Drug Discovery

Helical's funding is part of a broader trend in AI-enabled drug discovery and computational biology. Similar announcements include Kiin Bio's €1.9 million pre-Seed for a virtual scientist platform, and Scripta Therapeutics' €10.3 million Seed to develop a data-rich drug discovery platform. Together, these investments highlight a burgeoning cluster of innovation centered in the UK.

Daniel Graf, General Partner at redalpine, emphasizes the convergence of biological foundation models and general language reasoning models. “We backed Helical because we strongly believe they have what it takes to build the pharma AI orchestration platform,” Graf states. This platform aims to transition from isolated AI models to integrated virtual AI labs.

Founders with a Vision

Helical was founded in 2024 by three friends with diverse backgrounds. Rick Schneider, with a tech background from Amazon and Celonis, joined forces with Maxime Allard, a data scientist with experience at IBM, and Mathieu Klop, a cardiologist and genomics researcher. Together, they envisioned an application layer that would allow pharma teams to shift from model experimentation to reproducible, production discovery.

Despite the approval of only about 50 new drugs annually, with over 10,000 known diseases, Helical aims to overcome the constraints of slow, costly physical experimentation. The platform offers two product surfaces: the Virtual Lab for biologists and translational scientists, and the Model Factory for ML engineers and data scientists.

The Implications for Startups and Investors

For startups and investors, Helical's success signals a pivotal moment in the pharma industry. The integration of AI and data-driven platforms is becoming increasingly critical. As R&D spending exceeds €254 billion ($300 billion) annually, and drug development costs soar, innovations like Helical’s could streamline processes and reduce failure rates in clinical trials.

Helical is already operational with several top-20 global pharma companies, including a collaboration with Pfizer on predictive blood-based safety biomarkers. Looking ahead, the company plans to expand its deployments across more therapeutic areas and further integrate with top pharma organizations.

Conclusion

Helical's mission to enable scientists to test hypotheses at the speed of inference is not just ambitious—it's essential for the future of drug discovery. By turning in-silico discovery into a reliable R&D engine, Helical is poised to make a lasting impact on the industry. As the company continues to grow, its influence on the pharma landscape will likely expand, offering valuable lessons for startups and investors alike.
