The Power of User Generated Content

For early-stage businesses, building trust is often harder than building the product itself.

Potential customers don't just want to know what you think about your businessโ€”they want to see what other people think. That's where user-generated content (UGC) becomes so valuable.

UGC includes customer reviews, photos, videos, testimonials, social media posts, and any other content created by your customers rather than your marketing team. Because it's authentic and independent, it often carries more weight than traditional advertising. Consumers increasingly use reviews and peer recommendations to inform purchasing decisions, making authentic customer content a powerful trust signal.

For startups, the benefits go beyond credibility. UGC provides fresh content for your website and social channels, encourages customer engagement, and creates a sense of community around your brand. It also gives prospective customers confidence that real people are usingโ€”and valuingโ€”your product.

You don't need thousands of customers to benefit. A handful of genuine reviews, customer success stories, or tagged social posts can be far more persuasive than pages of polished marketing copy.

Create opportunities to engage your customers and help them tell your story - maybe it's a fun competition that customers can enter by posting and mentioning your brand. Or maybe you're holding an event and customers can tag you in their event photo's. It could simply be adding Google Reviews on your website so new visitors can see an existing customer base enjoying and valuing your product.

If your product is B2B, you could run a joint promotional exercise such as a 'customer spotlight' that includes content created by you and them, to cement the relationship, add more value and generate valuable promo material for both parties.

However you choose to engage your customers, UGC content is powerful social proof that you should be utilising to quickly move prospects to customers.
