UK deeptech startup MatAlytics has secured £619,000 in grant funding from Innovate UK to advance its structural physics AI technology for the steel sector.

History

The award builds on a previous £100,000 Innovate UK grant, giving the University of Nottingham spin-out further backing as it works to commercialise AI technology designed for critical industrial assets.

For founders and investors, the funding highlights an increasingly important area of AI investment. Rather than focusing solely on generative AI, MatAlytics is applying artificial intelligence to complex engineering problems where improved prediction, efficiency and safety can have significant industrial value.

MatAlytics is bringing AI into heavy industry

MatAlytics develops structural physics AI through its CITRUS software, which combines neural networks with finite element simulations to assess the structural integrity of industrial components.

The company's technology is designed to provide fast, real-time insights into the condition of critical assets, potentially helping operators make better decisions around maintenance and equipment performance.

The technology originated from around a decade of academic research at the University of Nottingham, before becoming a commercial venture.

MatAlytics has already worked with organisations including EDF, EPRI and Innovate UK, demonstrating how university research can move towards commercial applications in major industrial sectors.

Why the steel sector matters

The timing is particularly interesting for the UK steel industry.

The government has identified AI and digital technologies as having significant potential to improve efficiency, shorten product development cycles and support the future competitiveness of British steel. Its 2026 steel strategy includes up to £2.5 billion of government support for rebuilding and modernising the sector.

That creates an environment where technologies capable of improving industrial productivity could find a growing market.

For MatAlytics, the new grant provides an opportunity to demonstrate that structural physics AI can move beyond research and into commercially valuable industrial applications.

A promising signal for UK deeptech

The funding also highlights a broader opportunity for UK deeptech startups.

Building a company around advanced scientific research can require significantly more time and capital than developing conventional software. Grant funding can therefore help bridge the gap between promising research and a product that industry is willing to adopt.

For investors, MatAlytics represents the kind of deeptech opportunity where proprietary research, industrial expertise and AI converge.

The challenge now is turning that technical advantage into scalable commercial growth.
