Can you be an angel investor with little money?

Featured Replies

There seems to be an assumption that you need hundreds of thousands sitting in the bank before you can even think about angel investing.

We were discussing this recently and wondered how true that actually is.

Can somebody start angel investing with relatively small amounts of money, perhaps through syndicates or alongside other investors? What would realistically be considered a small angel investment?

I always assumed angel investing was basically for people with loads of money ๐Ÿ˜‚

Didn't realise smaller investments through a syndicate were even an option.

Yeah, you don't necessarily need a massive cheque. I'd be more worried about putting too much of your own money into one startup than the size of the first investment.

I'd still be careful with the "small amount" idea though. ยฃ5k can feel small until you've done that with 5 different startups ๐Ÿ˜…

That's a very good point actually ๐Ÿ˜‚
I think I'd be more comfortable spreading ยฃ5k around than putting ยฃ25k into one company.

That's basically why syndicates make sense to me. You're not pretending a tiny cheque makes you diversified by itself.

Also worth remembering you're investing in people, not just numbers on a deck. Small ticket doesn't mean small amount of time if you get too involved.
