The UK government is putting business leaders at the heart of its latest push for economic growth, with Prime Minister Andy Burnham meeting entrepreneurs, regional leaders and executives from some of the countryโ€™s biggest companies today.

The Downing Street meetings are intended to build a closer relationship between government and the private sector, with investment, innovation, infrastructure and job creation high on the agenda. Burnham has positioned his government as a potential โ€œpartner for growthโ€, arguing that Britain needs a change in how it supports people who start companies, invest and create jobs.

The programme brings together businesses from sectors including fintech, artificial intelligence, clean energy, advanced manufacturing, banking, telecommunications and energy. The government is also using the meetings to promote its wider plan to reindustrialise Britain and give more economic power to regional governments.

That regional focus could become particularly important for startups and scaleups outside London. Burnham has argued that devolving power and resources could help local areas attract investment, improve infrastructure and create stronger business ecosystems.

For founders, however, the bigger question is whether this shift produces practical changes rather than another round of government-business discussions.

Making it easier to start and scale a company could mean better access to infrastructure, more support for innovation and stronger links between businesses, universities and local authorities. Public investment could also be used to attract private capital into sectors where the UK wants to build long-term industrial strength.

There is also a difficult economic backdrop. The UK economy grew by 0.4% in July, helped partly by AI and cloud computing, but rising energy costs and higher borrowing costs are creating fresh pressure on businesses. The government is therefore trying to encourage investment while preparing for a challenging budget on 28 October.

The real test will be whether the new approach gives businesses enough confidence to invest, hire and expand.

For startups, that confidence can matter just as much as a grant or tax incentive. Founders need to know that the conditions around them will support growth rather than constantly change direction.
