Revolut has entered the UK personal lending market, taking another step towards becoming a primary bank for British customers rather than an app used mainly for payments and everyday spending.

The London-founded fintech has begun offering unsecured personal loans. The launch puts Revolut in more direct competition with established lenders including NatWest, Lloyds, Barclays and HSBC.

Loans of up to ยฃ25,000

The initial offer includes loans ranging from ยฃ2,000 to ยฃ25,000, with advertised interest rates between 6.9% and 29.3%. Revolut plans to roll the product out gradually, starting with selected customers before making it available more widely across its 14 million UK customer base.

The move follows years of growth for the fintech, which was founded in 2015 by Nik Storonsky and Vlad Yatsenko. Reports said that Revolut serves more than 80 million customers worldwide and has a private valuation of $115 billion.

The company also plans to launch a credit card in the UK, with mortgages a longer-term possibility. These products could help it earn more revenue from each customer and encourage more people to use Revolut as their main account.

However, lending is a different business from processing payments. Revolut must assess whether borrowers can repay their loans while managing defaults and the cost of funding. Unlike long-established banks, it has less historical customer repayment data, so it is supplementing its assessments with information from external providers.

What does this mean for founders?

Revolut's expansion is a reminder that customer acquisition is only part of building a sustainable financial business. A large user base becomes more valuable when customers trust a company enough to use additional services, but each new product also introduces operational, regulatory and financial risks.

For fintech founders, the lesson is not simply to keep adding features. New products need to solve a real customer problem while fitting the company's risk controls, expertise and long-term economics.

The launch also signals that competition in financial services is increasingly centred on the customer relationship. Digital businesses can challenge established providers, but winning everyday usage does not automatically translate into profitability or trust across every financial product.

For small businesses and consumers, more competition may bring additional choice. The value of a loan, however, still depends on the interest rate, fees, repayment terms and whether the borrowing is affordable.

Discussion question: Will digital banks like Revolut become the main bank for most customers, or will traditional banks keep their advantage when it comes to lending?
