Client keeps adding work but the price stays the same. How do you deal with this?

Featured Replies

To be honest, I'm getting a bit fed up with this ๐Ÿ˜…

I quoted a client for a project and thought we were both clear on what was included.

Then came the extra requests.

"Can we add this as well?"

"Actually, can you change that?"

"One last thing before we wrap up."

And somehow there's always one more thing lol.

The problem is I keep saying yes. Partly because I want the client to be happy, but also because I'm worried they'll think I'm difficult to work with if I start asking for more money.

Now I'm spending way more time on this project than I planned, and the price hasn't changed at all.

I know I should probably have set clearer boundaries from the beginning. But it's a lot easier said than done when you're trying to keep a client.

For those who've dealt with this, what actually works?

  • Do you charge for every request outside the original agreement?

  • Do you set a limit on revisions from the start?

  • How do you push back without making things awkward?

  • Or do you sometimes just let it go to keep a good client?

I don't want this becoming a regular thing with every project. How do you guys handle it?

I've dealt with this before. My advice is simple: stop doing extra work for free!

If it's not included in the original agreement, charge for it. Don't be afraid to bring up the cost just because you want to keep the client happy. You're running a business, not doing favours.

Set those boundaries early and put everything in writing. This is something worth agreeing on before taking on a client, as discussed in this thread.

Learned that one the hard way ๐Ÿ˜‚
