Hiring a Friend Sounds Great Until You Have to Manage Them

Featured Replies

A friend recently came up as a possible hire for my business. They're reliable, I know their work, and honestly, I'd probably trust them more than someone I've only met through an interview.

But I'm hesitating.

It's easy to say you'll keep things professional, but what happens when you need to tell your friend their work isn't good enough? Or they keep missing deadlines? Would you be just as comfortable giving them a warning as you would with any other employee?

There's also the awkward possibility that things don't work out and you end up losing a friendship over a job.

For those who've hired friends, how did it go?

Did you manage to keep the friendship separate from the working relationship, or would you avoid doing it again??

Oh, I've been here! I once brought in someone I knew really well, thinking we'd work brilliantly together. Then came the awkward feedback conversations and having to chase deadlines. ๐Ÿ˜‚

The hardest part was realising I couldn't keep treating them like a friend during work hours and expect things to run smoothly. Took me a while to get that balance right.

Hope you two figure it out!

Hey Harvey!

Maaaan! I think my case is similar way back when I had my first Job under a Startup Company. I knew the owner and I recommended to hire one of my close friend and maaaan it became a Headache! haha

My boss made me manage him because he thought my friend would listen to me because of our relationship but i was very hard for me.

In my case I would really avoid it, but yeah it would be still a case to case basis.
