Overview

We're excited to highlight the Mode Shift Revenue Support (MSRS) and Waterborne Freight Grant (WFG) programs, key initiatives designed to promote environmentally friendly freight transportation.

What is MSRS?

MSRS assists companies in covering the operating costs associated with running rail or inland water freight transport, particularly when these modes are costlier than road transport. This initiative aims to reduce the environmental impact of freight movement.

Summary of MSRS

  • Bidding Frequency: 4 times per financial year on specific dates.
  • Criteria: Applications are evaluated based on the Benefit Cost Ratio.
  • About the Waterborne Freight Grant (WFG)
  • The WFG complements MSRS by specifically supporting modal shift to waterborne freight services.

Summary of WFG

  • Bidding Frequency: 4 times per financial year on set dates.
  • Criteria: Applications are judged on financial viability.

Eligibility Criteria

  • MSRS Intermodal: Open to all standard intermodal unit traffic on railway infrastructure (Channel Tunnel traffic excluded).
  • MSRS Bulk and Waterway: Supports the movement of non-containerised freight by rail and all freight on inland waterways.
  • WFG: Targets coastal or short sea shipping services. Supports services for up to 3 years, with the expectation of economic viability without grant support thereafter.

Objectives

Both MSRS and WFG are committed to fostering a shift in freight modalities, aiming to reduce lorry journeys on Britain's roads. This not only contributes to environmental benefits but also promotes wider social advantages.

Participate and Contribute

We encourage our community members involved in freight transport to consider these opportunities. By participating, you can contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transport sector.
