  2. MATA Youth Hackathon on Government Communication, Branding & Trade Lead Ministry

    About the challenge
Kenya is home to one of Africa's most dynamic youth populations. Africa has the largest free trade area on earth. Yet the two have barely met โ€” not because of policy failure, but because of a communication gap that no one has been paid to close.
The MATA Youth Hackathon 2026 brings together Kenyan youth from all 47 counties to design the communication tools, guides, and systems that bridge that gap. This initiative is convened by Marketers Accelerating Trade in Africa (MATA), endorsed by the State Department for Broadcasting and Information, and funded by the Communication Authority of Kenya.
The solutions built here will not sit on a shelf. The three winning teams will have their work deployed inside real government communication systems โ€” making this one of the few hackathons in Africa where winning means your solution actually gets used.
    Get started
Read the three tracks and decide which problem your team is best placed to solve Register your team - you need 2 to 5 members, all enrolled in a Kenyan tertiary institution Find your County PRO Officer at mataafrica.com/counties โ€” they can connect you with mentors and resources in your area Join the WhatsApp support group [link at launch] for updates, Q&A sessions, and peer connection across counties Start building - the submission window opens on [date] and closes on [date] Requirements
    What to Build
You are building a communication solution โ€” not necessarily an app, not necessarily a website. The format follows the function. Choose your track first, then choose the format that best solves that track's problem.
Track 1 โ€” Translate the Deal
Build a tool or campaign that explains AfCFTA to an ordinary Kenyan in Kiswahili and at least one other local language, without jargon or acronyms, in under 3 minutes of reading or viewing time. This could be an explainer video, an illustrated guide, a radio script series, a WhatsApp message flow, or anything else that works.
Track 2 โ€” Open the Border
Build a digital guide or tool that tells a young trader exactly what they need to legally cross into Tanzania, Uganda, or Ethiopia with their product โ€” in under 3 minutes. This could be a step-by-step web guide, a chatbot flow, a printed reference card with a digital companion, or a structured WhatsApp information system.
Track 3 โ€” Make Kenya the Brand
Design a continental branding strategy that positions Kenyan youth-made products as the premium choice for African buyers under AfCFTA, across at least 3 African markets. This could be a brand playbook, a campaign strategy with executional specifics, or a digital toolkit for young Kenyan exporters.
Whatever format you choose, it must be real enough to hand to a government communication officer and say: use this next month.
    What to Submit

All four items are required. Incomplete submissions will not be judged.
    1. Pitch deck (PDF, maximum 15 slides)
Cover: the problem as you understand it, your solution, how it works, who it is for, and how government deploys it. No fluff. Judges read fast.
    2. Demo or prototype
A working link, a video walkthrough (maximum 5 minutes), or a downloadable file. This is your solution in action โ€” not a description of it. If it cannot be demonstrated, it will not score well on feasibility.
    3. One-page government brief (PDF)
Written for a senior government communication officer who has 90 seconds. Tell them what the problem is, what you built, and what they need to do to deploy it. No jargon. No bullet-point padding.
    4. County impact statement (200 words maximum)
How does your solution specifically serve your county? What language, context, or local knowledge did you bring to it? This is where your local roots become your competitive advantage.

    Judging Criteria
Relevance to government communication - 25%
Does this solve a real gap in how government communicates trade policy? Judges assess whether a government communication officer would recognise the problem and see the solution as directly useful. Feasibility of deployment within 6 months - 25%
Can this be handed to a government unit and deployed within 6 months using realistic technology, budget, and skills? A working WhatsApp flow beats a half-built app every time. Innovation of approach - 20%
Is the approach genuinely new? Not technology for its own sake โ€” a new format, language, channel, or problem framing counts. Repackaging existing government materials does not. Communication quality of the solution itself - 15%
Is the solution itself clearly communicated? Judges assess the deck, brief, and demo. If it cannot explain itself in 90 seconds, government will not deploy it. County and local context specificity - 15%
Does the solution reflect the language, culture, or economic reality of the team's county? Local rootedness is a competitive advantage here, not an afterthought.

  3. ImpactForge

Some problems are too important to ignore.
ImpactForge is an online hackathon for builders who want to do more than just build cool things โ€” they want to build things that matter. Whether you're tackling education, mental health, accessibility, the environment, or something else entirely, this is your space to turn a real problem into a real solution.
No experience required. No strict theme. Just a genuine desire to make something that helps people.
    What do I build?
Start with a problem that bothers you. Something in your community, your school, your neighborhood, or the world at large. Then build something โ€” an app, a tool, a platform, anything โ€” that takes a real swing at solving it.
    Do I need a team?
Solo or squad, both are welcome. Sometimes the best ideas come from one person with a clear vision. Sometimes they come from three people arguing productively in a group chat.
What if I've never done this before?
Perfect, actually. ImpactForge is built for mixed skill levels โ€” beginners and experienced builders work side by side. Mentors are available throughout to help you when you hit a wall.
    Requirements
    What to Submit
Keep it simple. Here's what you need.
    1. Project Name
    What's your project called?
    2. The Story Behind It
Tell us about what you built:
What problem are you addressing and why does it matter to you? How does your solution work? What are the key features? What tools, languages, or APIs did you use? Who does this help? 3. Proof of Work (Required)
Show us what you built. Upload at least one screenshot, demo video, or file that shows your project in action. No working project? Show us the design or prototype โ€” something visual is required.
    4. Project Link (Optional but Encouraged)
A GitHub repo, live demo, or any link that gives judges a closer look at your work.
    5. Impact Statement
In a few sentences, explain the real-world impact of your project. Who benefits? How does it help them? This is ImpactForge โ€” tell us why it matters.
    6. Your Team
List everyone involved and what they contributed. Solo? Just your name is fine.

  6. NeuralSprint

    Hey, you made it. Welcome.
Maybe you've never built anything before. Maybe you've tinkered a little but never finished something. Maybe you're just curious about AI and want to see what the fuss is about. Wherever you're starting from โ€” you belong here.
NeuralSprint is an online hackathon where you take an idea, build it out, and walk away with a real project you actually made. That's it. No gatekeeping, no intimidating prerequisites, no "you need X years of experience to join."
    So what do I build?
Anything you want โ€” as long as it involves some element of AI or technology. A simple tool that solves a problem. An app that makes someone's day easier. A weird experiment you've always wanted to try. Big or small, polished or scrappy โ€” it counts.
    Do I need a team?
Nope. Solo is totally fine. But if you want to team up with others, that's great too. Some of the best projects come from two people with completely different skills working together.
    What if I get stuck?
    ย
That's what mentors are for. You won't be left figuring it out alone โ€” there's support built into the whole experience.
    Requirements
    1. Project Name
What's your project called? Keep it simple and memorable.
    2. Tell Us About It
Walk us through your project in your own words:
What problem are you solving, or what does your project do? How does it work? What are the main features? What tools, languages, or APIs did you use? Who is it built for? 3. Show Your Work (Required)
Upload at least one screenshot, video, or file that shows your project in action. We need to see it working โ€” or at least what it looks like.
    4. Project Link (Optional but Encouraged)
Got a GitHub repo or a live demo? Throw the link in. It helps judges get a better look.
    ย
    5. Your Team
List everyone who worked on the project and what they contributed. Flying solo? Just put your name down.

  7. Hack The Limit

    Hack the Limit
Online. Open to all. Built for whatever you want to build.
The short version: Pick an idea. Build it your way. Ship something real.
Hack the Limit doesn't hand you a theme or a rulebook on what counts as "good enough." It's a wide-open canvas โ€” apps, games, tools, platforms, weird experiments that don't fit a category. If you can dream it up, you can build it here.
    For who?
Anyone curious enough to try. First-timers and seasoned hackers stand on equal footing โ€” there's no gate to walk through, no experience required.
    Solo or squad?
Your call. Some people work best alone, deep in their own head. Others want a team to bounce ideas off of. Both paths lead to the same finish line.
What you actually get out of it:
    ย
Hands-on building, not theory โ€” you learn by shipping
A community that's in it with you, not against you
Mentors who'll help when you're stuck
Bragging rights and prizes for the projects that stand out

    3. Project Files (Mandatory)
At least one screenshot, video, or file showing your project's functionality or design. This is required.

  12. Redditโ€™s Games with a Hook Hackathon

    Overview
Reddit is hosting a virtual hackathon from June 17th to July 15th. Weโ€™re offering developers $40,000 in prizes for games built to delight users.
The challenge: create a new Reddit game for the users of Reddit using Devvit, our Developer Platform.

For this hackathon, we're asking developers to use Devvit Web, which allows you to build Devvit apps using web technologies youโ€™re already familiar with (e.g. React, Phaser, three.js), or your favorite game engine (Godot, GameMaker, Unity, etc).

Participants will also have access to Phaser to make their game shine. The best app to use Phaser will be eligible for a special award.ย
    What to build
Build a game on Devvit (Redditโ€™s Developer Platform) using our Interactive Posts feature that inspires collective joy.
The Best Experience That Will Keep People Coming Back: Apps that give redditors a reason to return day after day. This could come from progression, daily challenges, fresh content, meaningful choices, social dynamics, or simply the anticipation of what happens next. We're looking for experiences that create excitement between sessions and leave players wanting to check back tomorrow. The strongest entries make every visit feel worthwhile. Players should have something to work toward, discover, unlock, influence, or look forward to each time they return. The format can vary widely, but the core focus should be creating a compelling loop that builds momentum over time and turns a one-time visitor into a regular player.
Examples of games on Reddit that bring users back day over day
    r/honk, r/colorpuzzlegame, r/bunnytrials, r/alignmentchartFills, r/hotandcold, r/dailyguess, r/bridgedit, r/battlebirds, r/kraw r/LETTERSET
    What weโ€™re NOT looking for:
AI Slop: Did you use AI? Fantastic! But it shouldnโ€™t be obvious the moment we open your app. Fit the UI in the viewport, give your app a unique identity, and make sure youโ€™re thinking of your human players. You can even ask your agentic assistant to help hide their involvement!
On the nose Reddit theming: Reddit-y does not mean the game is about Reddit, karma, subreddits, Snoo, etc. Reddit-y means human-first, embracing community, meritocracy, creativityโ€ฆitโ€™s in the spirit of the app and your use of all the things subreddits have to offer (comments, flair, feeds, community)! While making the app about the topic of Reddit itself is not forbidden, it is also not a hack for making an app โ€œReddit-yโ€.
Literal interpretations on โ€œGames with a Hookโ€: While we're not opposed to seeing a fishing game or two, games with a "hook" shouldn't be taken literally. We want to see hooky games as in retentive and replayable.
Common Ideas: Your game might not score as well if weโ€™ve seen it many times before. We see a lot of: space shooters, clone apps of popular games, simple platformers, collaborative storytelling apps, and trivia apps. If you do make one of these apps, make sure it's extremely unique.
    Sub-challenges
In addition to an excellent retentive experience, weโ€™re looking for standout apps that also achieve the following:
Best Use of Phaser: Recognizes the most innovative use of the Phaser game development framework within the Reddit Devvit platform.
Best Use of Retention Mechanisms: Reddit apps are discoverable in our usersโ€™ feeds. This means that apps that create daily, or recurring, content tend to see better growth and retention. This award will go to the best use of retentive mechanics in a game.
Best Use of User Contributions: Apps that enable users to generate content (comments, posts, drawings, puzzles, levels) drive redditor engagement and conversation. This award will go to the app that makes the best use of user-generated content.
Games must be built on Devvit Web and be compliant with our Devvit Rules. Read our guide on how to build games for Reddit for more guidance on building for our platform.
For this event we are looking for polish, meaning apps that are as close to launch-ready as possible (bonus points for a good mobile experience). We understand that not all projects will reach this threshold, but projects that are well tested and concept-complete will score higher.
While we are accepting existing projects for this event, please note the game should be significantly updated during the hackathon period to qualify for this event.

    Judging Criteria
    Delightful UX
Experiences should be built with exciting layouts and themes. While apps do not need to be perfect, it should be easy and fun to uncover what the app has to offer. Polish
Your submission should be as close to publishable as possible and compliant with Devvit Rules. Judges should be able to understand everything we need to know by interacting with example posts. The closer to launch quality, the higher the score here. Reddit-y
Reddit is all about community and embracing topics people care about, no matter how weird. We want apps to have their own identity, be community-minded, and bring something fresh to the platform. The best apps will bring a community together. Hook-y
Does your app provide a compelling reason for users to return regularly? Strong apps create anticipation, ongoing goals, evolving experiences, or fresh opportunities that encourage users to come back day after day. [Phaser Category] Phaser Innovation
Phaser judges will look for creative, effective use of Phaserโ€™s tools and workflow that meaningfully elevates gameplay, polish, and technical execution.

โ€‹Finale: Finalists Pitch and Prize Giving Ceremony, venue TBC.
    ย
โ€‹The future of compute is also on-chain. Sign up now to be part of the movement.
    Requirements
Judging criteria Each project is scored out of 100 points, weighted across five dimensions. Judges score independently; final scores are averaged. In the event of a tie, the higher score on Technical Execution breaks first, followed by Use of Chutes.
    ย
The same rubric applies to both the University and Corporate categories. The Sign in with Chutes special track is judged separately, on best use of that single feature.
    ย
    1. Technical Execution โ€“ 25 points How well the project is built. Judges look at code quality, architecture, completeness, and whether the demo actually works end-to-end. A working MVP beats a polished idea that doesn't run.
    ย
21โ€“25: Fully functional, clean architecture, handles edge cases, deployable.
15โ€“20: Works for the core flow, minor rough edges.
8โ€“14: Partial implementation, key features missing or buggy.
0โ€“7: Concept only, broken demo, or unable to run.
    ย
    2. Use of Chutes โ€“ 25 points Mandatory criterion โ€“ projects that do not use Chutes as their compute provider are disqualified. Within that floor, judges score depth and creativity of the integration: are participants meaningfully leveraging on-chain inference, or just calling an endpoint as a wrapper?
    ย
21โ€“25: Chutes is core to the project; non-trivial use of agentic workflows, on-chain inference, or platform-specific features.
15โ€“20: Chutes is used as the primary compute backend with thoughtful integration.
8โ€“14: Chutes is used but in a shallow or replaceable way.
0โ€“7: Token integration, or Chutes not used (auto-disqualification at 0).
    ย
    3. Innovation & Creativity โ€“ 20 points Originality of the idea and the approach. Judges reward projects that take a fresh angle on the productivity theme rather than reproducing existing tools. Novelty in the problem framing counts as much as novelty in the solution.
    4. Impact & Relevance to Theme โ€“ 20 points How well the project addresses "productivity solutions for students, corporates, or general public." Judges assess whether there's a real user, a clear pain point, and evidence the solution actually moves the needle. Projects with a defined target user and a credible go-to-market story score higher than generic productivity tools.
    5. Presentation & Demo โ€“ 10 points ย
Clarity of the 5-minute video and the live finalist pitch. Judges look for a clear problem statement, a focused demo of the working product, and a coherent explanation of what was built during the hackathobn.

    Requirements
    Project Work
AnimalHack is a โ€œflexibleโ€ online hackathon. You can work on your project anytime before the deadline.
    Project Submission
Complete ALL of the following 3 requirements:
Submit your project to Devpost by 12pm on September 12 (Sat), EST. Register your project presentation through the designated Google Form by 12pm on September 12 (Sat), EST. Deliver a project presentation online on September 13 (Sun), EST. The deadlines are firm. No extensions will be given. Failure to meet all 3 requirements will disqualify you (and your team) for award consideration.
The form for presentation registration will be shared in the AnimalHack 2026 channel in Discord. You will be asked to provide:
*ย Presenter name and contact information
*ย Country of residence (time zone)
    *ย Project title
*ย Project abstract (brief one-paragraph project description)
*ย Publicly accessible link to your project
The project link may direct to a code repository such as GitHub, a shared storage such as Google Drive, a live application, or another publicly accessible location. The link must provide evidence of your projectโ€™s actual outcomeโ€”not only a description or proposal.
We will use this link to verify the actual outcome of your work and confirm its relevance to AnimalHack. Please note that we will not schedule your presentation if we cannot access or verify your actual work.
    Project Presentation
We will announce the schedule of project presentations (i.e. what time each presentation starts) by early morning of September 13 (Sun), EST. A Zoom link will be shared in the AnimalHack 2026 channel in Discord.
In our current plan, we will kick off at 10am on September 13 (Sun), EST. However, we may adjust this to accommodate presenters in different time zones.
You will have 10 minutes in total for your presentation, including approx. 3 minutes for QAs with the judges and other participants.
