  2. Women TechEU - Call 4, July 2025

Women TechEU is a two-year EU-funded project funding and supporting women leading deep tech startup companies from Europe. Across the two years, the consortium will launch a total of four calls for applications. Applicant startups will undergo a rigorous evaluation and a total of 160 winner startups will receive €75k in non-dilutive grants as well as a personalised business development programme including mentoring, coaching and training.
    Aims
The Women TechEU project is on a mission to ignite the potential of women-led early-stage start-ups in deep tech. 160 talented women entrepreneurs from across the European Union and Horizon Europe associated countries will be receiving direct support. With 75k€ grant (non-diluting finance) and a personalised business development programme, the project will be paving the way for these innovators to shine as leaders in deep tech innovation across Europe.
This project is a continuation of the Women TechEU scheme that was managed before by the EISMEA (European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency) during 2021 and 2022, and it has now become a fully-fledged cascade funding project that is run by an EU-wide consortium made up of different innovation ecosystem players, representatives of women entrepreneurs and also investors.
    Prizes and support
During 2 years, the project will give out a total of 12 M€ in non-diluting finance over 4 different competitive calls. Each cohort of successful entrepreneurs will then be also invited to use the menu of business development services that will be provided over a period of 6 months. Constant contacts and checkups of the KPIs that will be jointly developed by the entrepreneurs and their coaches will ensure that there is a smooth ongoing scaleup of their businesses, in order to prepare the winners to eventually also apply for the EIC Accelerator scheme.
    Eligibility
Entrants must be an early-stage, start-up in deep tech, raised less than 1M€ in equity, not at Minimum Viable Product phase, founded or co-founded by women who hold a CEO, CTO, CSO or equivalent position. Women must hold at least 25% of the shares, and the proposal must be unique and not previously funded in the Women TechEU or other similar EU initiatives / projects. The company must employ fewer than 250 persons, and either have an annual turnover not exceeding EUR 50 million, and/or an annual balance sheet total not exceeding EUR 43 million.
The applicant must be established in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country. (This includes the UK.)
    Deep tech definition
Deep tech innovation aims to provide concrete solutions to our societal problems by finding its source in a deep interaction with the most recent scientific and technological advances and by seeking to produce a profound impact in the targeted application areas. Sectors, which are most fertile for deep tech applications are life-science, computing, food and agri-tech, aerospace, energy and clean-tech, industrial technologies, telecom, new materials, or chemistry. However deep tech also includes, among other, artificial intelligence, deep learning and machine learning. Women TechEU welcomes applications from all deep tech fields of activity.

State threats are overt or covert actions by foreign governments which fall short of direct armed conflict with the UK but go beyond peaceful diplomacy and expected statecraft to harm or threaten the safety or interests of the UK or our allies.
State threats present a real and evolving risk to the UK. They can manifest in a range of forms. These include attempts to:
steal sensitive information through espionage or cyber attacks threaten the public’s safety, including through physical violence. harm our prosperity undermine our values and freedoms State threats do not only materialise against government and intelligence agencies. Some states are particularly interested in industrial or commercial information which could be used to support their own economy or military. This information may not be β€œclassified” or an obvious target for espionage.
States may seek to exploit foreign direct investment, academic partnerships and supply chains to gain access to sensitive information.
This includes information on companies’ products and plans or commercial/academic research. State actors could seek to fast track their own technological capabilities or increase their military advantage. Examples of industries in which states show particular interest include advanced materials, biotech, and artificial intelligence. It also includes research and mainly academic research, particularly in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), dual-use technologies, emerging technology and other commercially sensitive areas. As with business information, state actors could seek to exploit research to improve their own technological or military capabilities.
Are state threats relevant to the private sector and small businesses?
Yes. State actors do not only target large corporations or government entities. In fact, companies of all sizes β€”especially those with lower levels of securityβ€”can be attractive targets. No business is too small or too early-stage to be of interest, particularly if it holds valuable intellectual property, innovative technologies, or sensitive data.
Can a small company really do anything to protect themselves from state threats?
Yes. There are steps businesses of any size can take to reduce their vulnerabilities to state threats. The aim of the protective security measures outlined in Secure Innovation is to reduce the risk to the business and increase the risk to the state actor trying to get hold of their assets. The better an organisation’s protective security measures are, the harder a state actor will have to try to get access to their technologies, and the greater the chance that they will be detected doing so. State actors will make a risk-benefit decision on who to target, so the higher the risk to them, the less likely they are to try.
How do you apply for a Security Review?
A company can apply for a Secure Innovation Security Review here.
Applications are assessed by Innovate UK Business Growth against the criteria set out in the application form.
    Is funding guaranteed?
Secure Innovation Security Reviews is a subsidy scheme. Until all slots are filled, organisations that meet the eligibility criteria and successfully pass the application process will be offered access to a partially funded Secure Innovation Security Review. Participating companies will contribute Β£500; while the government will fund the remaining Β£2,500.
Funding for the scheme is limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the available funding has been allocated, no further awards can be madeβ€”meaning only a limited number of companies will be able to benefit from the scheme this financial year.
It should be noted that the government will fund Β£2,500 (including VAT) of the total cost of the review which is Β£3,000 (including VAT); by making an application for a Security Review an organisation is confirming their agreement to fund the remaining Β£500 (including VAT) of the overall cost. This will be invoiced and paid directly to the Security Reviewer.
Where do you find information on appointing an appropriate Security Reviewer who can complete the review?
Following approval of your application, your organisation will be required to appoint a Security Reviewer to carry out the review. A list of approved Security Reviewers will have been shared in the grant acceptance email. It is the organisation’s responsibility to choose an appropriate professional from this list.
All approved Security Reviewers are either Chartered Security Professionals (CSyP), appear on the Register of Security Engineers and Specialists (RSES) or are NCSC assured Cyber Advisors. They have applied to be part of this scheme, have completed training on the Secure Innovation Security Review framework with NPSA and NCSC and passed a knowledge check to demonstrate an understanding of the scheme and framework, and have signed up to complete reviews anywhere in the UK.
While we provide basic information about each professional’s experience and location preferences to assist organisations in making a selection, the framework and scope of the scheme remain consistent across all reviewers. Therefore, it is not advisable for organisations to request multiple reviewers to β€˜bid’ or β€˜pitch’ for the review.
We recommend that organisations appoint their chosen Security Reviewer withinΒ one weekΒ of receiving the grant acceptance email to ensure timely scheduling of the review.
What do you need to do before meeting the Security Reviewer you appoint?
Firstly, you should share the content of your confirmation email along with a copy of your application form with the appointed security reviewer.
Secondly, you should undertake the Secure Innovation Action plan preparatory work.
What do you need to do before the due date?
The deadline detailed in the confirmation email is the deadline for your Security Reviewer to have submitted a final report. Prior to this deadline a company must:
Appoint a Security Reviewer from the list provided. Share the content of the confirmation email along with a copy of their application form to the security reviewer. Complete the preparatory work. Arrange an in-person site visit with the Security Reviewer. Review and sign-off the report. Confirm that your Security Reviewer has submitted the final report and their invoice for Β£2,500 via email to secureinnovation@iukbg.ukri.orgοΏΌ The business receiving the security review will be responsible for paying the outstanding Β£500 to the appointed Security Reviewer. What if you can’t complete the above by the due date?
Innovate UK Business Growth should be contacted by email secureinnovation@iukbg.ukri.org as early as possible by the party requiring an extension (either the organisation or security reviewer) to request an extension to the deadline.
If the report is not submitted within the time allowed and an extension has not been agreed; or if an extension has been agreed, but the report is not submitted before the expiry of the extension period, we will assume the review report is not going to be submitted and withdraw the funding offer. Innovate UK Business Growth will not be responsible for any costs incurred by the business or Security Reviewer if funding is withdrawn.
It is the organisation’s responsibility to ensure that the Security Reviewer is aware of the deadline detailed in the confirmation email.
Is the Security Review report confidential?
Yes. It will only be shared with selected individuals within DBT/DSIT, Innovate UK, NPSA and the NCSC.
Does the Β£3000 cover the cost of implementing protective security measures?
No, the Β£3000 is for the purposes of the security review only.
How long will the Security Review scheme run for?
Applications for the current scheme will be open until the end of the 25/26 financial year. There are grants available for 500 organisations, which will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis to organisations who pass the eligibility criteria and assessment.
Does the review include penetration (PEN) testing?
The reviews do not include PEN testing. NCSC have the CHECK scheme which is a list of NCSC approved companies who can do cyber PEN testing. NPSA do not recommend PEN testing for physical and personnel security.
Do we get an official certification or is there a logo we can display to show we have gone through this process?
This is not a certification scheme, as there is no requirement and/or test or audit to ensure organisations have implemented the security measures recommended by the review. We do not offer a logo which companies can display to show they have gone through the process. This is to avoid the risk of the scheme being misinterpreted as a certification or accreditation scheme. However, you can mention having had a security review completed as a way of demonstrating your commitment to security.
What data will be collected as part of the Secure Innovation Security Review Scheme?
Data will be collected through various stages of the scheme, including the application process, site visit, written report, Health Check Questionnaires, and feedback surveys. This may include business contact details, security-related information, and feedback on the scheme.
Who will my data be shared with?
Your data will be shared with the following organisations involved in the funding, delivery and oversight of the scheme:
Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) Innovate UK National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) Innovate UK Business Growth service consortium delivery partner Why is my data being shared with these organisations?
These organisations are responsible for funding, managing, delivering, and evaluating the scheme. Data sharing enables them to monitor the scheme’s effectiveness, assess behavioural change, and inform future improvements or expansion.
Will my data be used for marketing purposes?
No. Your data will not be used for marketing purposes unless you have explicitly consented to this.
Is this data sharing compliant with UK GDPR?
In accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018 (as applicable), by participating in the Secure Innovation Security Review Scheme, you acknowledge and agree that any data you provide or that is collected throughout the scheme via the site visit, written report, Health Check Questionnaires, and feedback surveysβ€”may be shared with Innovate UK Business Growth service consortium delivery partner, the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA), and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). This data will be used solely for the purposes of administering, evaluating, and improving the scheme, and for monitoring its impact. All data will be handled in accordance with applicable data protection laws and will not be used for marketing purposes without your explicit consent.
By providing your contact details, you agree to any partner mentioned above storing your information and they may contact you at a future date to learn about your experiences and to share opportunities related to other Secure Innovation products. Your data will be handled in accordance with the relevant privacy notices of each organisation as available on their websites.
Who can I contact with questions about data protection?

  13. RevenueCat Shipaton 2025

Welcome to the RevenueCat Shipaton β€” the mobile hackathon that’s all about shipping… a ton.
At RevenueCat, we're all about supporting developers to build and monetize amazing apps. After the overwhelming success of last year’s Shipaton, we’re thrilled to announce the return of our global hackathon.

This August and September, we’re inviting developers from all corners of the globe to ship new apps and compete for over $300,000 in cash prizes and truly unique rewards.
    The challenge
    Your mission is simple:
Ship a brand-new app to the iOS, Android, or Mac App Store between August 1st and September 30th, 2025.
Integrate the RevenueCat SDK to power at least one in-app or web purchase.
Our goal is to give you that final push to ship that project you’ve had in the back of your mind but never took the time to get started.

Note: Updates to previously released apps won’t qualify - it’s all about bringing something new to life!
    Bigger and better

Last year's Shipaton sparked a frenzy of creativity and innovation across the internet. Developers blew us away by launching incredible apps, producing inspiring YouTube series, flooding social media with #BuildInPublic journeys, and creating insightful shorts on TikTok and Instagram.

You could receive a coveted β€œShippy” award and your app displayed on the iconic β€œThe One” billboard in Times Square!
Inspired by your amazing contributions, we've upped the ante for 2025:

    Over $300,000 in cash prizes.
Winning apps featured prominently on the giant billboard in Times Square.
Trip to New York City with invites to RevenueCat’s App Growth Annual conference.
    Categories

OneSignal Boost Award: Honors the app that shows the most creative or impactful use of messaging to elevate user engagement using OneSignal.
Staff & Sponsors Award: A special category just for employees at RevenueCat and our amazing sponsors who couldn’t resist joining the fun. 14. TiDB AgentX Hackathon 2025

Welcome to the TiDB AgentX Hackathon: Forge Agentic AI for Real-World Impact, running from August 1 to September 15, 2025. Last year’s event saw thousands of developers build simple RAG demos. This year, we want multi-step AI agents that demonstrate real-world workflows. Whether you use vector search, full-text search, Model Context Protocol (MCP), or Bedrock’s LLMs, your goal is to deliver solutions that do more than answer a single question. Teams can win a share of over $30,000 in prizes, connect with TiDB engineers, and be featured on our blog and podcast. Let’s see what you can build.
    Requirements
    What to Build
Leverage TiDB Serverless (including vector search) on TiDB Cloud to create a working software application that showcases an innovative, multi-step, agentic solution. Your agent must chain together at least two of the following building blocks in a single automated workflow:

Sample Project Workflows (for inspiration only)
Step Description Ingest & Index Data Pull in vectors, full-text docs, images or logs into TiDB Serverless (PDFs, chat logs, sensor feeds, whatever you like) Search Your Data Query those indexes with vector search, full-text search or both to find similar cases and relevant records Chain LLM Calls (Optional) Call Bedrock or any LLM to analyze results, summarize findings or suggest next steps Invoke External Tools Plug in APIs or services such as payment gateways, mapping services, calculators or Slack bots Build a Multi-Step Flow Wire everything together so the agent moves from input all the way through to a final action in a single automated process
Sample applications built with TiDB Serverless.
    What to Submit
Provide the TiDB Cloud account Email associated with the Project (You can sign up for a TiDB Cloud account here)

  17. Maximally AI Shipathon

🧠 About the Challenge Maximally AI Shipathon is a 48-hour global hackathon where you don’t need to be a coder, genius, or β€œAI expert” to join. It’s for anyone who’s curious, chaotic, or creative β€” and wants to build something real with AI.
    It’s fast. It’s friendly. It’s a little messy.
But you’ll leave with a project, new people, and a ton of momentum.
Whether you build solo or with a team, this is your chance to explore, experiment, and ship β€” without the usual pressure.
🎯 Who is this for? First-time builders & students
    No-code makers & indie hackers
    AI-curious creators, designers & storytellers
Anyone who wants to try something fun and real in 48 hours
You don’t need prior experience β€” just bring your energy.
🧭 Choose Your Track Pick a track that fits your vibe (or invent your own):
πŸ› οΈ Build with AI β€” Tools, bots, websites, agents, automations

    Requirements
πŸ› οΈ What to Build This hackathon is your playground. You're not here to impress some panel in suits β€” you're here to explore what AI can do, collaborate with others, and ship something real.
Here are some ideas across our 3 core vibes:
πŸ› οΈ Build with AI AI-powered tools, agents, or assistants
Chrome extensions, web apps, or automations
    GPT-based workflows or chatbots
Productivity hacks, daily use tools, or startup MVPs
🎨 Create with AI Music, visuals, or videos generated using AI
    Branded content, memes, storytelling experiments
Podcast snippets, voiceovers, or remix tools
Design kits, art drops, or identity experiments
πŸ§ͺ Experiment with AI Prompt hacks and strange simulations
AI pranks or absurd ideas that surprisingly work
Weird tools that serve no purpose but are cool anyway
Something nobody’s built before, even if it half-breaks
There are no wrong answers here. You can build solo or with a team. Use code, no-code, or pure prompt magic. Just make sure it’s yours β€” and make it during the event.
πŸ“¦ What to Submit Every submission must be made through Devpost before the deadline (Sept 1, 12:00 AM IST).
    You’ll need to include:
    πŸŽ₯ 1. A Demo Video (max 2 minutes) Screen-recorded or self-shot β€” doesn’t need to be fancy
Just show your project, how it works, and what it does
    Authentic > professional
    πŸ“ 2. A Short Write-up Tell us:
    What you built
    Why AI was used
How it works / how you built it
Optional: What tools/tech you used, and what surprised you
Β 3. Working Link This could be a GitHub repo, hosted site, or live demo
If it’s not live, at least show it running in your video

  23. Contracts for Innovation: Resource Efficient Chemicals Impacts

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), in collaboration with Innovate UK, will invest up to Β£3 million in this Contracts for Innovation competition.
The aim of this competition is to build on the DESNZΒ Unlocking Resource Efficiency research by supporting organisations to deliver an impact validation report for a resource efficiency solution.
If your own organisation does not have operations in the relevant sector, we expect you to include an integration supporter in your project to help facilitate the impact validation of your solution. This could be (e.g.) a manufacturer, recovery business, remanufacture or repair business, potential customer, or a specialist in impact validation.
The impact validation should be informed by a demonstration which may be carried out as part of the project or otherwise conducted within the last five years.
The innovative resource efficiency solutions should address themes in one of the following strands:
Resource Efficient Chemicals Impacts (this strand) Resource Efficient Construction Impacts Resource Efficient Automotive Impacts This is a single phase competition.
For applications in this Resource Efficient Chemicals Impacts strand, your project can focus on one main theme:
    industrial symbiosis in the chemicals sector redesign of chemical formulations and products defossilisation: captured CO2 defossilisation: sustainable biomass defossilisation: chemical or mechanical plastic recycling, or other valorisation routes for waste streams .accordion_cleanup .prose :where(ul>li):not(:where([class~=not-prose] *))::marker { display: none; } .accordion_cleanup li.relative { margin: 0; padding: 0; list-style: none; } .accordion_cleanup .prose ul { list-style-type: disc !important; } .accordion_cleanup .prose li { padding-left: 0.375em !important; margin-top: 0.5em !important; margin-bottom: 0.5em !important; } { const el = $refs['accordion1']; const top = el.getBoundingClientRect().top + window.pageYOffset - 80; // adjust offset window.scrollTo({ top, behavior: 'smooth' }); }); } else { selected = null; } "> Who can apply?
To lead a project, you can:
be an organisation of any size, including those based in the EU, EEA or internationally work alone or with the subcontracted skills and expertise of others from business, research organisations, research and technology organisations, or the third sector (charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups) Contracts will be awarded to a single legal entity only. The majority of the project work and key deliverables must be completed by the applicant and be carried out in the UK. Subcontractors can be used, but only for specialist skills.
If your own organisation does not have operations in the relevant sector, we expect you to include an integration supporter in your project to help facilitate the impact validation of your solution.
Demonstrations should be in a suitable industrial environment within the UK to enable the effective validation of the solution’s viability and impacts. We also welcome applications for solutions which have been demonstrated in a relevant sector in the UK within the last five years, but which have not yet reached commercial maturity and require further impact validation.
Your project could involve, for example:
a manufacturer within the chosen sector, for example, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), tier 1, tier 2 and tier 3 suppliers, raw material producers recovery businesses, for example, demolition companies, scrap processors, re-use and recycling facilities remanufacturing and repair businesses organisations that have the potential to become a customer specialists in impact validation, for example, in Life Cycle Analysis We recommend approaching potential integration supporters as early as possible during the application process or early stages of your project. This ensures your industry relationships are well established before delivering the project demonstration. We welcome projects that include innovative startups.
If your project is successful, we reserve the right to request letters of support from organisations named in your application.

start no sooner than 1 November 2025 end by 31 March 2026 last between three and five months have total costs of between Β£50,000 and Β£300,000, inclusive of VAT; we expect the majority of projects to have costs less than Β£100,000 Demonstrations should be in a suitable industrial environment within the UK to enable the effective validation of the solution’s viability and impacts.
Projects can be 100% funded, as Contracts for Innovation competitions involve procurement of R&D services at a fair market value and are not subject to subsidy control criteria that typically apply to grant funding.
    { const el = $refs['accordion3']; const top = el.getBoundingClientRect().top + window.pageYOffset - 80; // adjust offset window.scrollTo({ top, behavior: 'smooth' }); }); } else { selected = null; } "> General scope (applies to all three strands)
The aim of this competition is to build on the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ)Β Unlocking Resource EfficiencyΒ research by supporting organisations to deliver an impact validation report for a resource efficiency solution.
This should be informed by a demonstration, which may be carried out as part of the project or otherwise conducted within the last five years.
The innovative resource efficiency solutions should address themes in one of the following strands:
Resource Efficient Construction Impacts Resource Efficient Chemicals Impacts Resource Efficient Automotive Impacts You must select a single strand to apply for. If a project covers multiple strands, choose the one in which the majority of the work will be undertaken.
Innovate UK and DESNZ are collaborating with the chemicals, construction and automotive sectors to accelerate and increase the adoption of innovative resource efficient technologies, low carbon materials and circular business models. This is supporting the government’s commitment to transition the UK to a Net Zero, circular economy.
This competition will focus on the impact validation of resource efficiency solutions. This competition will support the development and delivery of high maturity demonstrations, and the validation of demonstrators from recent (within the last five years) research and development projects.
    This competition will:
enable efficient integration of technologies into targeted industrial sectors support innovative suppliers for market readiness provide more granular evidence on the potential impact of resource efficiency solutions to help meet the UK’s territorial carbon budget targets As a minimum, proposals into this competition must relate to solutions at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5 or higher. If you have validated your solution at TRL5 (in a relevant environment) your project should be to validate up to TRL7 (in an operational environment) and gather operational data to develop a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA).
If you have already validated at TRL7, your project should be to gather operational data to develop an LCA.
In both cases, the solution should still be a prototype or custom built system, not a full commercial version. You must show evidence of this, the testing and validation previously undertaken as part of your application and identify the TRL that you expect to be at start and end of the project.
    { const el = $refs['accordion4']; const top = el.getBoundingClientRect().top + window.pageYOffset - 80; // adjust offset window.scrollTo({ top, behavior: 'smooth' }); }); } else { selected = null; } "> Specific scope for Resource Efficient Chemicals Impacts
We encourage you to focus on innovative solutions within the chemicals value chain, includingΒ tier 1, 2 and 3 chemicalsΒ (see Fig 1). Solutions should improve the resource efficiency of the sector and reduce life cycle emissions. Solutions must fall within one or more of the following themes:
1)Β Industrial symbiosis: uses for industrial by-products, including materials that would otherwise go to waste or be downgraded to lower value uses, but excluding heat and energy
2)Β Redesign of chemical formulations and products to reduce emissions and improve circularity, such as:
reductions in resource intensity of chemical formulations for a given product, or products production efficiencies to reduce material waste and improve yield rates when using defossilised chemical feedstocks transitions to circular business models including β€˜chemicals as a service’ or β€˜chemical leasing’ approaches 3)Β Defossilisation: replacement of virgin fossil-based organic feedstocks with captured CO2, particularly where:
the CO2 may be derived from sustainable bioenergy, direct air capture or other point sources; impact validation should include these activities any hydrogen feedstock used is not fossil derived 4)Β Defossilisation: replacement of virgin fossil-based organic feedstocks with sustainable biomass.
5)Β Defossilisation: replacement of virgin fossil based organic feedstocks through chemical plastic recycling, or other valorisation routes for waste streams
Solutions in the defossilisation themes could include:
development of new tier 2 and 3 chemical synthesis routes that do not rely on fossil-derived based chemicals development of chemical formulations that do not rely on the traditional petrochemical value chain and support the creation of high value consumer products repurposing and retrofitting of existing process equipment built for fossil-based feedstocks repurposing and retrofitting of feedstock supply chains built for fossil-based feedstocks improvements in feedstock quality feedstock distribution and logistics You are encouraged to identify how your solution builds on the existing research and innovation landscape, for example, referencing:
theΒ Unlocking Resource EfficiencyΒ research NICER Circular Chemical Economy CentreΒ insights theΒ Sustainable Chemicals and Materials Manufacturing Hub (SCHEMA Hub)Β insights theΒ Innovation Action Plan to Transform Industrial Waste Gases to ChemicalsΒ by theΒ Circular Economy Innovation Network You must demonstrate a credible and practical route to market, so your application must include an assessment of the commercial viability of your solution and a plan to commercialise your results. TheΒ specification reportΒ provides details of the commercial assessment that you must undertake as part of this project, and an initial assessment is required as part of your application.
    { const el = $refs['accordion5']; const top = el.getBoundingClientRect().top + window.pageYOffset - 80; // adjust offset window.scrollTo({ top, behavior: 'smooth' }); }); } else { selected = null; } "> Demonstration requirements
A key project deliverable, that must be included in your milestones, is a demonstration of the solution. The further validation of demonstrations and trials from recent research and development projects is also in scope, provided these meet the eligibility requirements for this competition. Costs for retrospective work cannot be claimed, only new analysis to validate the potential impact of the demonstrated technology.
The demonstration must take place in an environment representative of where the solution will be deployed, allowing for effective evaluation. As part of your project milestones, you are encouraged to invite stakeholders from your target sector to a demonstration event. The demonstration must take place in a setting where potential customers and industry representatives can witness the solution as a compelling business proposition.
If your own organisation does not have operations in the relevant sector, we expect you to include an integration supporter, for example, a trusted sector representative in your project to help facilitate the demonstration and trialling of your solution. In their role as potential future customers, they will be well placed to propose an appropriately representative environment.
You will be expected to collaborate with your integration supporter to achieve this, securing all necessary permissions and approvals.
    Example environments include:
within a manufacturing process within a recovery or recycling facility within a remanufacturing, re-use or repair facility in an end-use site, such as a construction project within a customer facing environment, such as retail This list is not exhaustive, and other environments may be more appropriate to demonstrate certain types of solutions.
You should de-risk all aspects of your project before submitting a bid to this competition, ensuring it can be delivered in line with the requirements of DESNZ and Innovate UK.

  25. Contracts for Innovation: Novel shielding materials and technologies for fusion

This is a Contracts for Innovation (previously SBRI) competition funded by the UK Atomic Energy Authority. The aim of the competition is to develop solutions to fusion energy challenges in two key priority areas. The competition has one theme: Novel shielding materials and technologies for fusion. This covers:
Reducing the carbon footprint of fusion power plants through novel radiation shields. Improving the economic prospects for fusion through lower cost, flexibly deployable, or reusable radiation shielding. Reducing external dose and increasing component survival through improved shielding. This is a Phase 1 feasibility study and there is no restriction on technology readiness level.Β  Future phases will depend on funding.
We expect to fund a number of projects. Each project should start by October 2026 and be delivered by April 2026, lasting up to 6 months. Each project can range in size up to total costs of Β£250,000, inclusive of VAT. (The total budget is Β£2.5m.)
Further documentation is available by registering on the UK government’s contracts finder at the link below, and expressing your interest in the contract.

To lead a project, you must be an eligible organisation of any size with a UK registration or registered office (this includes academic organisations and businesses).
You may work alone or with others from business, research organisations, research and technology organisations or the third sector as subcontractors
Applicants are welcome from all sectors.
    { const el = $refs['accordion2']; const top = el.getBoundingClientRect().top + window.pageYOffset - 80; // adjust offset window.scrollTo({ top, behavior: 'smooth' }); }); } else { selected = null; } "> Technical specifications and technology scope
The aim of this competition is to promote innovation in radiological shielding for the expected usage cases within future fusion power plants including, but not limited to, the STEP prototype. The different applications include shielding from neutrons – both interior or exterior to a fusion vessel, as well as shielding from gamma dose during operation and maintenance. But the requirement is more than just sufficient shielding; there is a desire to innovate to reduce the carbon/environmental impact of shielding during manufacture, transport, installation and decommissioning, as well as reducing cost where possible by reducing mass/volume requirements (which will also help to make fusion systems easier to design and manufacture) and encouraging recycling/re-use.
    A proposal could focus on:
Novel shielding materials and designs for in-vessel neutron and gamma shielding; solutions that provide sufficient shielding with a minimised volume and/or mass. High efficacy in-vessel shielding with improved radiation tolerance and environmental compatibility (thermomechanical loading, corrosion resistance, fuel retention, etc.) to improve component lifetimes (and thereby reduce replacement requirements, overall cost and environmental impact). Reduced activation options for in-vessel shielding – lowering the lifetime activation of the shield components will be important for reducing lifetime environmental impact (and decommissioning costs). Novel modular shielding for ex-vessel (e.g. bioshield) applications with reduced lifecycle (manufacture, operation, decommission) carbon footprint. Modular shielding solutions (particularly for ex-vessel), considering both new (lightweight) materials and/or novel fabrication methods to achieve modularity. Challenges will exist around ensuring the modularity doesn’t create reduced shielding performance (e.g. due to shine paths). Shielding solutions that balance reusability against initial fabrication cost (economic and environmental) – considering whether a reusable system can have a higher initial environmental footprint or cost of manufacture but this can be offset against increased total lifetime. This could apply to both in-vessel and ex-vessel applications. For full technical specifications with details of shield performance requirements, please register at the link below and download the supporting documents.
    { const el = $refs['accordion3']; const top = el.getBoundingClientRect().top + window.pageYOffset - 80; // adjust offset window.scrollTo({ top, behavior: 'smooth' }); }); } else { selected = null; } "> Further requirements
    Your proposal must:
reduce the risk involved in the take up of new technologies outline plans to accelerate time to market be pre-commercial explain the rationale for the solution and describe the expected impact define how the proposed solution would enable and support the delivery of sustainable fusion power plants demonstrate a clear plan for commercialisation with a route to market for affordable, developed solutions describe how solutions can be tested in a representative or real world explain how any potentially negative outcomes would be managed, such as on the environment or society demonstrate how you will work with at least one potential future customer throughout your project how export control and regulation will be addressed Your solution must:
be based on sound fundamental technical principles be innovative be practical and deliverable take affordability into consideration demonstrate the potential for cost-effectiveness integrate with existing systems where necessary consider user experience throughout the design and development process Preference will be given to applications which:
help the innovation be formally accepted for future use in a fusion plant environment, for example by obtaining relevant regulatory certificates offer innovations which consider existing infrastructure and potential interfaces You must demonstrate a credible and practical route to market, so your application must include a plan to commercialise your results.
